Funded PhD Opportunity in Conservation Biology at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign

Applications are invited for a NSF-funded PhD graduate assistantship in conservation biology at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Research will focus on geospatial analysis and modeling of species distributions under climate and land-use change.

The ideal candidate will possess a Master’s degree by the starting date and prior research experience and/or demonstrated competency in spatial analysis using GIS applications. Applicants should have strong quantitative skills and an interest in spatial ecological and species distribution modeling.

Experience with R and remote sensing image processing are desirable, but not necessary. Strong writing skills, the ability to communicate effectively, and the desire to work in a team are also essential.
The assistantship includes a stipend of $21,000 per annum, fringe benefits and tuition waiver. The university is an AA/EEO employer and encourages applications from women and minorities.

Funded PhD Opportunity on issues of Mobile Mapping

The Faculty of Sciences, research institute Expertise Centre for Digital Media of Hasselt University seeks a (m/f)
PhD student computer science, specialisation 'human-computer interaction'
Task description
Recent controversies surrounding mobile maps have highlighted the importance of cartography to human-computer interaction (HCI) and information visualization on mobile devices. However, despite the prominent role of “map apps”, they have not yet been robustly examined with a lens informed by the decades of relevant research in the field of cartography. Moreover, principles and best practices established cartography have largely not been integrated with the work of “GeoHCI” and Geo UX researchers and practitioners. Drawing on the well-established literature of academic cartography and research in mobile HCI, you will then identify, and implement, and evaluate potential solutions.
Profile
  • Enthusiastic applicants with excellent study results are invited to apply. Successful applicants have a keen interest in the HCI-research topics at EDM and can work independently as well as in team.
  • As the HCI research in EDM is strongly software oriented, the successful candidate should have solid knowledge of and experience with software development.
  • The candidate has knowledge of software development on the Android OS for mobile devices.
  • The candidate has knowledge of and/or experience with usability design, preferentially on mobile devices.
  • The candidate is interested in maps, cartography and spatial information.
  • The candidate has a very good knowledge of English.
Diploma
Candidates should have a master degree in computer science, a civil engineer degree in computer science or equivalent. Students, who expect to complete these studies during the summer, are also invited to apply.

One Funded Ph.D. Studentship in Remote Sensing and Forest Landscape Modeling in the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte

Gang Chen and Ross Meentemeyer in the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte seeks a PhD student with a strong interest to develop remote sensing algorithms designed to model landscape-scale changes in forest structure and carbon storage following interacting ecological disturbances (forest disease and wildfire) in coastal forests of California. The ideal candidate should have basic training in remote sensing and GIScience, environmental modeling, statistical analysis and programming. Dr. Daniel W. Goldberg, PhD-RA position

Dr. Daniel W. Goldberg in the Department of Geography, at Texas A&M University (TAMU) invites applications for a Ph.D. Research Assistant position to begin in the fall of 2013. Qualified candidates should have a Master’s degree in Geography, Computer Science, or a related discipline and expertise in geographic information systems (GIS); desktop, server, web, and mobile programming; and CyberGIS and very large spatial and spatiotemporal databases. Research assistant activities will include the development and evaluation of algorithms; the implementation, testing, and support of prototype and enterprise systems; and spatiotemporal analysis and modeling. Tasks will include software development; spatiotemporal data management and analysis; and the presentation and publication of research results. Experience with modern programming languages (.Net, Python, R, C++, etc.), GIS software, and server–based systems is required.  Preference will be given to applicants with strong programming backgrounds and excellent communication skills.

PhD Scholarship available “Historic GIS”

within the Cluster of Excellence:
“Asia and Europe in a Global Context”



Within the Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe in a Global Context” at Heidelberg University http://www.asia-europe.uni-heidelberg.de/en/ we offer a PhD scholarship within an interdisciplinary project involving historians and the GIScience Research Group. The overall aim is to investigate ships as floating transcultural spaces.


The PhD candidate shall develop a Web-based Historic GIS that provides spatial analysis functionalities for detecting spatiotemporal clusters in the unique data source Lloyd’s List. This is providing historic information on global shipping on a daily base.
Geocoding and analysing the spatiotemporal Lloyd’s Lists data on the movement of people, goods and information onboard of nineteenth-centuryships vividly brings to life the migrational, commercial and, thus, cultural circuits and networks that powered contemporary processes of globalization.
Therefore relevant GIS functionality and spatio-temporal cluster analyses shallbe made available in a Web platform usable for historic research.

The scholarship is 1200 Euro per month plus funding for travel and other costs. The PhD shall start in March 2013. 



Requirements -
MSc in Geography, Geoinformatics, Computer Science or related area – Background in one or more of the following areas: Web-GIS, SDI, Spatial Analysis, Geocomputation, Historic GIS - Demonstrated strong programming experience - Excellent English skills (written and oral), Excellent communication & organizational skills.
