I have over twenty five (25) years of experience in the design and implementation of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Geomatics, in research projects, teaching and operational applications towards Agroenvironmental Sustainability and other scientific fields (Earth Observation, Socioeconomic Resilience, Protection of Natural Resources, Forestry, Wildlife Protection (Flora and Fauna), Fair Trade, Cultural Heritage, Regional Planning, Health, Energy, Blue Growth and more). I have worked as Expert with several national and international organizations (several European Commissions’ Directorate Generals on Space, BioEconomy, ICT, Environment, of EIP AGRI; as expert of the German Aerospace Center (DLR); as senior researcher of major research institutions and organizations: iCRE8, ELGO DEMETER, GSRI, SBE, OPC, NGO ARCTUROS, of universities (AUTH, IHU, Perrotis College, Hellenic Firemen Academy, and of USA Universities WPI, Lincoln), as well as of companies (Epsilon Malta Ltd, PROTEUS, REFARM, etc.). I have permanent presence in international conferences, seminars and workshops on related subjects. I have (co)authored 48 research papers, 6 posters and 7 national and international books. Currently, I am Assistant Professor (Adj) of IHU (International Hellenic University), Lecturer (Adj) of Perrotis College, American Farm School of Thessaloniki and Scientific Consultant of the startup REFARM. In recent years, I led as Senior Executive Officer and Professor (2020-21) of the National Planning Authority in Malta, research and educational projects through the SPATIAL TRAIN program; I have participated in more than 65 research projects and supported as Senior GIS Officer, R&D and field activities of most of them; I contributed in two (2) ERASMUS+KA2 projects with Perrotis College (SMART FARMING, AGREENSMART), one (1) PRIMA (SUSMEDHOUSE), 2 LIFE projects with NGO ARCTUROS and I was PI Principal Investigator) and Coordinator of two (2) projects (CODE 21 & DOVECOTES) in Cyclades, selected after open competitions organised by the Cycladic Identity and by the Cyclades Preservation Fund. Previously: In 2024, I was Research Agent in a national program of the Hellenic Statistical Authority ELSTAT and also, I was supervisor in Syros of a project of WPI (on Cultural Heritage); in 2023 I was Senior Postdoctoral Researcher of the University of the Aegean on Smart Blue Growth («Network of Research and Technology of Aegean Archipelago: Strengthening Regional Innovation, Entrepreneurship & Excellence» - MIS 5046494). I have extended teaching experience, at pre-/post-graduate university level, teaching of adults, of farmers, of governmental agents and of firms' professionals with more than 10.000 ed. hours. I am also member of several international committees. Since 2014, I have been teaching, by invitation, GIS applications in MSc Courses of different departments and scientific fields: in MSc Courses of Perrotis College, in MSc Courses of the International Hellenic University (MSc in Logistics and MSc in Innovative Systems of Sustainable Agricultural Production) of IHU. Important Awards in the last years: In 2023, I was PI and coordinator of the proposal 'AGRISTEWARD', top finalist of the national ELEVATE GREECE competition, in 2022, I was PI and coordinator of the proposal ‘IDEA’, top finalist of the national TROPHY CHALLENGE; in 2021, I was awarded the “Green Award” of HORIZON-2020 projects in Malta, as a researcher of the team of the Sim4NEXUS project; In 2020, I was selected as a Marie Curie RISE scholar at the “SMARTSHIP” project; in 2018, I received the “Athinoula A. Martinos Professor Award of 2017-2018”, for distinction in teaching, research and service. Moreover, since 2010, I have been continuously selected as Expert Evaluator of EC, having evaluated, up to now, 160 research proposals on several research frameworks (Horizon-Europe, Horizon 2020, Fp7, Fp6, Fp5, ERA, CINEA, EIT, EASME, ERANETMED, FIREWARE, KBBE, etc.).
Exceptional: I have created the novel concept/model of Precision Organic Agriculture developing algorithms and indicators, through GIS applications. My geospatial, managerial actions with the NGO ARCTUROS included agroenvironmental entities, natural ecosystems, policies, anthropogenic constructions and wildlife (flora, fauna and waters) and they were deployed in national and cross border regions of 2500 up to 8500 sq. kilometers in Central and Northern Greece.
